Language Arts

K-12 Language Arts Philosophy
We believe:

  1. Effective communication is the key to becoming a contributing member of a changing global society
  2. All students have the potential to develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills based on individual differences.
  3. Language experiences must be incorporated in all curricular areas
  4. Language Arts learning should be drawn from a variety of community, media, and technology
  5. All students must be exposed to a variety of literature that reflects a global community
  6. What a student brings to his/her language learning in terms of cultural and social experiences and interests enhances and enriches all learning.

Program Strands:

  • Reading/Literature

  • Speaking/Listening
  • Language Study (grammar, conventions, spelling, vocabulary)
  • Research/Study Skills

Goals:

  1. Students read to understand a variety of materials for a wide range of papers.
  2. Students demonstrate knowledge of language structure, language conventions (grammar, usage, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, capitalization, and media techniques.
  3. Students employ a range of writing strategies and processes to communicate their ideas in ways that suit their purpse and audience.
  4. Students will use reading, writing, listening, and viewing to:
    • Gather and organize information
    • Communicate effectively
    • Succeed in educational, occupational, civic, social, and everyday settings.
  5. Students will speak purposefully and articulately and students will listen and view attentively and critically
