A Black Belt in Music Class?

May 2, 2013

Bryan third and fourth grade students have been learning how to play recorder from a motivating method.   "Recorder Karate" is a program in which music students earn "belts" as they learn new and progressively more difficult pieces and skills on the recorder.   The "belts" are colored tassels that are displayed on the recorder as they are earned.

This program allows students to learn leadership, cooperation, basic music reading and notation skills.   It allows them to move at their own pace and level, and rewards them for their progress.    The wall in the music  room is decorated with the colors in difficulty order, and the students names are displayed as they progress through the levels.  The Bryan students are enjoying the challenge of earning a new belt and the competition with their classes.
