Let's Go Shopping

Students were given $2,500 to spend on remodeling the room of their choice ... bedroom, kitchen, dining room, laundry room, living room, or bathroom.  As they remodeled the room, they were told seven specific items they needed to purchase in order to make the room complete.

The project helped students better understand mathematical concepts an formulas by applying them in a real life situation.  They also integrated math with technology, providing them with the opportunity to utilize their cognitive, technological, and creative abilities.  This project also provided a motivational strategy that encouraged an appreciation for mathematics.

Students were given stores to shop at by using the internet.  They needed to shop and purchase their items where they would save money but spend as close to $2,500 including a 7% tax as they could in order to purchase the seven items for the room they remodeled in their home.  Each store that they could purchase their item from was having a sale with a percent off.  Therefore, they had to consider the discount on the sale price.
