What's New in Physical Science?

April 13, 2013

Physical Science classes are currently studying harmonic motion.  The students are examining where harmonic motion can be found in nature, art, music, and technology.  Using our classroom CPO Equipment, they are measuring the amplitude and period of a pendulum.  This data is used to determine how they can change the properties of their group's pendulum.  What has a greater effect on the period: weight, amplitude, or the length of the pendulum?  The students also observed how a system in motion, such as a pendulum, loses energy due to friction.  Energy loss was calculated by finding the time it took for their pendulum to decrease from an amplitude of 30 degrees to 10 degrees.
