Are you ready for some FOOTBALL?

As a new teacher to the district, assigned to co-teach pre-algebra, I was anxious to begin to build relationships with my co-teacher and my students as soon as possible.  As luck would have it, Mrs. Vrbka and I share a love for Fantasy Football and we agreed that we would be able to use the unit to review and practice previously taught skills as well as teaching 9th grade standards.  In addition, we felt we could use the unit to teach cooperation and collaboration, engage students in other subject areas (art, writing, speaking), and possibly introduce them to a hobby they could share with friends, family and co-workers in the future.

As we introduced the game, I began to have doubts.  Few kids expressed excitement about football; in some classes, the ones who hated it outnumbered the ones who loved it!  After an introduction to the concept of the hobby, we practiced scoring a pretend fantasy team.  After some initial confused looks, the math part made sense and they started to get into it a little.  Next week I will share some of the successes we witnessed…
