Deciphering the Periodic Table

October 10, 2011

What are the first 20 elements on the periodic table?  Are they metals, nonmetals, or metalloids?  How many protons are in their nucleus, and how can one tell by reading this highly organized chart?  Physical Science students in Mr. Spotanski's class are busy decoding the numbers and identifying trends on the periodic table of elements.  Focusing on the first 20 elements on this chart, students have created notes to identify protons and neutrons in the nucleus, electrons in the electron cloud in a neutral atom, and Lewis structures for these elements.  These students are working to build an understanding of terminology associated with atoms as well as making models of atomic structure for application in future science classes at LHS.
