LHS Appreciation for Veterans
November 17, 2015
Veteran’s Day is a time to say thank you and recognize the sacrifices of those who have served in the military. On November 6, Lexington High School’s Destination:Graduation teams met with their academic teams to recognize and celebrate first quarter academic successes. Also during this event, students took time to watch a video of an Honor Flight for World War II Veterans. The video was footage taken on the plane as vets received packets of letters from friends and family members. Students were able to see the impact that written words of appreciation often have on people. Students were then asked to write a letter to a veteran that they knew or just to a veteran in general. At the Veteran’s Day assembly at the high school on November 12, over 275 letters were presented to Steve Zerr, the Dawson County Veteran’s Service Officer, to distribute to veterans across Dawson County. In addition, letters will be included in care packages sent to soldiers by L-Club and some letters will be given to veterans on the Dawson County Hero Flight in April.
Lexington High School students expressed a great deal of appreciation and understanding through their letters. A few letters are included as a sample:
Dear Veteran,
I would like to thank you for the time you served risking your life in the military. I really appreciated the fact that you voluntarily spent so much of your life for America’s freedom. My great grandfather was in the army, but passed away shortly after my birth. Because of you, I have a free education, feel safe in my country, and have a home to go to every night. I cannot thank you enough for your courageousness to keep me, my family, and our country safe.
Sincerely,
A thankful Lexington High School Student
As a student coming from an immigrant family, I wouldn’t have made it here in the U.S. today if it weren’t for our veterans. For your service, the U.S. has the title, “Land of the free, and the Home of the Brave,” which I believe is true. Everyday I come here to school, to get an education, so that I myself can give back to the country by developing the future of technology. The only reason I’m able to do this is because you veterans have given us students the protection for our country, so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me that opportunity.
With many thanks
Dear Veteran,
Regardless of what you did, when you did it, or where you did it, just know that your service to our country is appreciated everyday, by every single person in this country. All the physical, emotional, and psychological pain that you endured, and continue to live with perhaps, was not felt by me, but the thought of it puts it all into perspective- the weeks, months, and years away from home, the stress, the boredom of being isolated- and makes me that much more grateful and appreciative of your actions. Words cannot express what I believe you have gifted America with. May God bless you with health, love, happiness, and prosperity. You deserve that, and more!
Sincerely,
A Grateful 15 yr. old girl
Dear Veteran,
I sincerely appreciate you for your service. You are a man of honor and respect. If it weren’t for you, this country wouldn’t be free. You set an example for younger generations so they learn to be courageous. Young boys look up to you as a role model, as I do. Thank you for your bravery and will to fight to this country. Your name will always be remembered for centuries throughout your family and friends.
Sincerely,
A Free Boy
