LHS Business Education Classes with Zach Jones

February 24, 2016

It is February and for many of Americans that means it is time to do their taxes. Before I became a teacher I spent four tax seasons working as a CPA (Certified Public Accountant), helping individuals and businesses with their taxes. I spend time in several of my classes (Personal Finance, Business Math, and Accounting) talking about taxes. I found that many of my students worked many hours at their jobs and would be eligible to get a refund for most of their income tax that was withheld from their paychecks. My goal for my classes is to make it as realistic as possible so I started giving the option for students to bring in their tax information before school and I would show them how to file their tax returns. The first year I had several students take me up on my offer. Word has started to spread and this year I have had my own students and other students who I don’t teach come in to file their returns. To date I have helped 7 students file their returns and collect thousands of their hard earned dollars back in refunds. It is really fun for me when they see how easy it can be to do their own taxes and hopefully they will use their refunds to start saving for college.
