TLC Program with Mr. Foster

December 11, 2015

Hello, my name is Chuck Foster and I am the new teacher for the TLC program here at Lexington High School. The students in our classroom struggle with day to day activities that we all take for granted. They work very hard to improve their skills each day because they want to be as much like everyone else as possible.

One interesting highlight that has occurred in our classroom to date is the transition from PECS communication to a technology based communication program using an iPad. PECS are picture icons that when used in a series, can communicate the wants and needs of students. The technology-based program uses icons and phrases that when touched by the student’s finger, will speak for them. This program opens a whole new world in regards to our students being able to communicate with peers, school staff, parents, community members, etc…

The caveat of using this type of technology is our students will have a higher quality of life because they will have a voice.

We also had our Christmas Grill n Chill luncheon in the Community Room at the high school. The menu consisted of smoked pork loin, baked beans, potato salad, and macaroni salad. We had a good turnout and it appeared everyone went away happy and full.  On behalf of our support staff and students, thank you to all that came.

I would like to leave you with a quote that we hope everyone keeps in mind when interacting with individuals with special needs. If you are an advocate of special education we appreciate your support and we thank you.
