Change the World

September 20, 2019

Technology has a language. It’s called code. I believe coding is an essential skill. Learning to code teaches you how to solve problems and work together in creative ways. And it helps you build apps that bring your ideas to life. I believe everyone should have the opportunity to create something that can change the world. So I’m excited that Lexington High School is offering 3 different programming classes and a robotics class this year.

One of the programming classes is Swift iOS app design. Students are learning Swift, which is a language developed by Apple and used on iOS devices. Students have programmed a computer simulation and a 21-question game. They will continue to build their knowledge of Swift to build and create an app. Java Script is another programming class that is being offered. Students are learning the basics of JavaScript and have started to code and build sprites. Sprites will become characters in game development. The third programming class that is being offered is Web development. Students are learning HTML and CSS to create and build their own website. The final opportunity allows students to combine code with engineering. Students will be put through different challenges to design and build a robot to complete a task. This robot will be programmed to run autonomously (without a driver) as well as with a controller. Students will use CAD programs to help design their robot before constructing it. It is really an exciting time to see the opportunities for students to use technology to create something that can change our world.
