Daily Fun Facts

January 27, 2017

One of our eight classroom initiatives at Lexington High School is to have a “Sponge” activity at the beginning of each class period.  This activity can be of the teacher’s choice, but is aimed to get the students engaged at the very beginning of the class.

I use the “Daily Fun Facts” from the Educational Resources of Minnesota web site.  Each day their site has the following:

  • Thought of the Day, which is an inspirational quote from some well-known person or by someone unknown.
  • Joke of the Day, some are cheesy yet very school appropriate J
  • Random Fact of the Day, such as, “When reading, use a finger to track words on the page.  A study found it stops eyes from wandering, so you read and comprehend 4x faster!”
  • Journal Entry Idea, like; I wish I could be like…  This person is special because…

Using these “Daily Fun Facts” creates class discussion about topics that would probably not be discussed during a “normal classroom” setting.  This affords the students the opportunity to get to know their classmates on a different level.

My favorite quote from this site so far is, “Grudges are a waste of perfect happiness. Laugh when you can, apologize when you should, let go of what you cannot change.”—Unknown.
