English with Mr. Mac

September 16, 2016

Summer is gone and the fall weather is upon us which means that the 2016-2017 school year is in full swing! In junior English, the students are being challenged to "awaken their imagination" as Sir Edgar Allan Poe questions the line of reality and the fantastical. Classes have read Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Masque of the Red Death," and "Murders in the Rue Morgue" (note: first ever detective story!), and once they moved past the tough writing style of Poe, discussions were elaborate and very academic! In addition, the freshman are alive and well (no Poe here!). This incoming class is working hard to review the Write Tools strategies and engage in their first "high school" writing of the year which went extremely well! Also, the focus of their first reading is conflict, and surprisingly, all agree that it is a necessary (Disclaimer: we are not promoting it, only studying it!) part of life. To better understand conflict, students are reading Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game." This intense story has students on the edge of their seats as Rainsford faces one conflict after another! Stay tuned for more from the wonderful world of English!
