LHS Students Participate in College Search & Investigate Event

October 5, 2017

Thirty-four Lexington High School students from Ms. Archer’s various transition/career-planning courses were among the 100 Nebraska high school students selected to participate in the grant funded Career/College Search & Investigate (CSI) Transition Event sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Education and the Nebraska Central Region Transition Committee.  This first of three College & Career Explore events was held in late September 2017 on the MPCC McCook Community College campus in McCook, Nebraska.

Participating students from this region toured the McCook campus of Mid Plains Community College observing a variety of learning environments, career fields, campus life, and student support systems.  Students focused on the types of post-secondary training available in the Hard Sciences, Social Sciences, Fine Arts, the Skilled and Technical Sciences, and Business, Marketing and Management.  They further explored organization and options within each career cluster, college life, and prerequisite skills/educational preparation and requirements.  Students were encouraged to ask questions in each setting.

In addition, all participants toured the library, student services, student housing, and ate lunch at the McCook Community College campus cafeteria.  This allowed students to experience “college atmosphere and cuisine”.

At the end of this transition event, students completed an “autopsy” evaluation of their experiences.  This feedback revealed the “hands-on activities” in each scholastic/career area, the tour of the campus, and the “college cuisine” were key event highlights.  According to Reeca Lopez, a LHS sophomore in Ms. Archer’s Career Exploration class, “The CSI on McCook Community College campus really opened my eyes to possible career options for me.  I learned a lot…and being on campus made college seem a really choice that I need to consider for my future.  I’m so glad I had this chance to participate.”

The next grant funded CSI Transition Event sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Education and the Nebraska Central Region Transition Committee will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 on the Central Community College – Hastings campus.  For further information regarding this and additional transitional events/opportunities, please contact Becky Archer, LPS Transition Coordinator, at becky.archer@lexschools.org.
