The Mission of the Spanish Courses

December 7, 2018

Students in class are reviewing some of the benefits of becoming fluent in a foreign language class. Students had the opportunity to create some statements in Spanish about the mission of the foreign language courses and they came up with the following statements:

  1. It is essential to prepare us for a world where a foreign language is a necessity, not a luxury.
  2. Language learning should be fun and rewarding, and all students should have the tools needed for success.
  3. Our learning will impact our future learning of a foreign language both, inside and outside of the classroom.

With this in mind, the Advanced Spanish courses are being conducted by a program that makes language learning exciting, relevant, and effective. This quarter, students are doing more exercises that can be done orally as a class, pair, or in groups. I discourage students from translating the readings into English and relying too heavily on a dictionary. My goal is to cover as much as possible in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking of the target language.
