7th Grade Debate

Mr. Koch’s language arts class combined with Mrs. Risinger’s social studies class to hit upon a touchy subject in today’s schools.  Should teachers be allowed to carry firearms for school safety?  Students targeted ethos, logos, pathos, claim and counter claim to prepare for the debate.  After all the research and debate writing was finished, the students were able to share their claims in a double class period debate.  They organized inside the classroom, splitting into two groups based on their arguments either for or against arming teachers.  The heated debate ended in a tie and students gained valuable insight into how their careful preparations can be used to discuss real world problems.
