What is L & L?

Students in Mrs. Smets' 6th grade Social Studies classes have gotten serious about latitude and longitude. We are able to locate any place on the earth using exact coordinates.

It all started with knowing that the latitude lines run west and east but they measure distances north and south!  That's a difficult concept to grasp.  To complicate it even further, longitude lines run north and south but measure distances west and east.  The Equator and Prime Meridian have been on our minds constantly as we practice accurately measuring degrees.

We also learned who actually uses latitude and longitude on a daily basis, (besides social studies students and teachers.)  They would be: aviators, cartographers (mapmakers), historians, geographers, members of the military and even travel agents!  Maybe you use this type of measurement as well!
