What genre do you enjoy reading?

booksThis might be a great question to ask your middle school student-because LMS students are becoming very knowledgeable about different literary genres.

Last year we decided to take a Barnes & Noble approach to the library's organization and we spent a great deal of time organizing all of our fiction books into twelve different genres: mystery, horror, humor, fantasy, classics, science fiction, historical fiction, sports, chick lit, action/adventure, graphic, and general fiction.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive! Students are able to identify the genres that they really enjoy and find more books in that same genre. The new arrangement also makes it easier to try out books in other genres, as they are so easy to find.

We have a reading club that meets each quarter for each grade, and students must read books in specific genres to qualify to attend. For example, for 2nd quarter reading club for 6th graders, which will be held December 15th, students are required to read either fantasy or science fiction. 7th and 8th graders are required to read historical fiction or action/adventure.

So have a discussion with your student at dinner tonight. What genre do you enjoy reading?
