Making The Mean. . . More Friendly!

March 6, 2017

Mean, median, mode and range are all terms used to describe data. Students encounter data while conducting science experiments, analyzing their grades and achieving their Accelerated Reader goals.  Understanding the many ways data can be described and the vocabulary associated with each method may be confusing, but may be easier with the following rhyme.  (Think of the nursery rhyme, "Hey Diddle, the Cat and the Fiddle.")

Hey diddle diddle,
The median's  in the middle.
You add and divide for the mean.
The mode is the one that occurs the most.
And the range is the difference between.
