Memorization is a lost art in school today.  In 6th grade Study Skills we have been giving our brains a workout by memorizing all 44 US Presidents in order.  We used the book Yo, Millard Fillmore! by Will Cleveland and Mark Alvarez to help us in this endeavor.  This book creates a memorable picture for the reader to use as a mnemonic device, and each picture is connected to the next so that the reader can keep the pictures (and Presidents) in order in their mind.  It has been a fun and challenging exercise that shows students that if they put their mind to it, they can memorize more than they would have thought they could.  Another way we have put our brains to the test is memorizing poetry.  Students used strategies found on the website Mensa for Kids and memorized poems from a list on that same site.  Hopefully students will be able to apply the strategies we used in class in the future as they take on new and complex learning tasks.
