Reader’s Theatre

This last week Mrs. McKenna’s Reading class was working on a Reader’s Theatre project. Reader’s Theater involves students in oral reading through reading parts in scripts. Unlike traditional theatre, the emphasis is mainly on oral fluency.  Two plays were practiced: SOS Titanic is about the famed ship and it’s sinking in the Atlantic Ocean. Demeter and Persephone is about the two Greek goddesses and how they influenced the seasons.

Each student chose a character in the play. They practiced for three days, practicing fluency, voice, and vocabulary skills.  On the fourth day, students performed their Reader’s Theatre in front of Mr. McKenna’s Computer class.

Reading classes who want to improve fluency skills, vocabulary skills, confidence levels, and have a lot of fun, should consider performing a Reader’s Theatre in their classroom!
