What Is That?

April 8, 2015

Have you ever had a difficult time starting a conversation with your middle school student?  Well have I got the perfect topic for you.  Recently we were discussing the information technology revolution that is happening in India.  Shortly thereafter, we started talking about all of the different technology devices we use today to move, record, and process information.  The kids named things like ipads, ipods, computers, cellphones, tablets, etc.  Well I had to kind of chuckle when they brought up cellphones.  I told them that we didn’t have cellphones when I was their age, back then everybody had a landline.  They looked at me funny and then said, “what is a landline?  So I explained.  I also described the bulky computers we used when I was in junior high school.  And I informed them that we thought we were pretty cool when we got a VCR while I was in high school.  Again, I was faced with the question, “What is that?”  As you know this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to technology that has come and gone.  So if you have a little extra time flashback to your younger days and share some technology from your era.  Your kids will get a kick out of it!
