What We’ve Been Learning in Social Studies
Mrs. Deal – Social Studies Teacher
Students across our Social Studies classes have been busy engaging in meaningful learning experiences that connect directly to real-world skills and historical understanding.
Foundations of Leadership:
Students have been setting individualized MAP goals for the year. We’ve spent time learning how to create realistic academic targets and reflect on strategies to support growth. This has helped students take ownership of their learning and understand how their daily habits tie into long-term progress.
Geography:
In Geography, we have begun studying Political Geography, focusing on how and why country borders change over time. Students are also beginning a research paper where they examine an empire of their choice—tracing its rise to power, its period of greatest influence, and the reasons behind its decline. This project encourages critical thinking, strong research skills, and a deeper understanding of how political boundaries shape the world.
Government:
Government students recently wrapped up a unit on Voting Rights. We explored how voting in the United States expanded from being a right limited to white, land-owning men to the more inclusive system we have today. Students demonstrated this knowledge through a “voting timeline poster,” which visually highlights key milestones in the evolution of American democracy. We are now moving into our next unit: the Legislative Branch. Students will learn how Congress is structured, how laws are made, and how this branch represents the people.
Each class is building on essential skills—research, analysis, civic understanding, and goalsetting—to help students become informed and thoughtful learners. A photo of one of our voting timeline posters is included below to show an example of the great work students have been doing.
