Real-World STEM: LHS Forensics Students Tackle Semester-Long Classroom Mystery

This semester, Lexington High School Forensic Science students are stepping into the shoes of crime scene investigators. Inspired by the Central Community College (CCC) Criminal Justice program, science instructor Mr. Zarate staged an immersive, simulated mystery scenario in his classroom to teach students authentic forensic analysis methods. Staff member Mr. Holden generously volunteered his identity as the mock subject for the classroom case.

 

Throughout the term, students will meticulously collect, document, and analyze a wide variety of simulated evidence using real-world scientific techniques:

  • Serology & Chemistry: Testing synthetic blood evidence to determine chemical properties and analyze spatter patterns.

  • Forensic Mathematics: Calculating bullet calibers, impact angles, and trajectory paths using classroom-safe prop materials.

  • Biometrics & Impressions: Documenting, lifting, and cataloging fingerprint and footwear patterns.

  • Time & Decay Analysis: Applying biological formulas to calculate estimated Time of Death (TOD) and Post-Mortem Interval (PMI).

 

By the end of the semester, student investigative teams will compile their laboratory data, present their evidence boards, and reveal “who dunnit.” This project-based unit highlights how Lexington Public Schools connects daily classroom learning to post-secondary college and career pathways in science, law enforcement, and public service.
