Uncovering Mathematical Truths: Students Discover the Math Behind Science!

Miss Crandall

Understanding the world around us can be an arduous task. Our universe is so vast, detailed, and extremely interesting; students in Miss Crandall’s Physics and Physical Science classes are working hard this semester to use mathematics, critical thinking, and problem solving skills to uncover the realities that define the natural world. So far, students in Physical Science and Physics have discovered the mathematical truths behind all kinds of motion and the forces that are at play in various scenarios. For example, Seniors in Honors Physics used Newton’s 2nd Law to discover why racecar drivers typically burnout before taking off through thorough calculations and analysis.

Students in Physical Science have been hard at work practicing various math skills to solve problems, convert units, and learn about the motion and interactions between objects. Recently, students worked together to complete a lab where they launched small cars on a track using rubber bands. They used photogates and timers to collect data, then used their brains to analyze their data, complete calculations, and learn something about the various factors that caused the motion of the cars.

Students in Honors Physics are beginning the process of building a bridge out of popsicle sticks. They have been following the Engineering Design process and are essentially playing the role of a real engineer by completing research, writing proposals, creating blueprints, and working around specific criteria and constraints to build a bridge with the strongest weight bearing capacity.

Students in Physics and Physical Science will leave this classroom having gained a better understanding of how the world works, and a stronger belief in their individual ability to overcome challenges through hard work and a growth mindset!
