Context Clues, Deductive Reasoning and Sherlock Holmes
As seniors gradually progress toward the magic day of graduation, they are going to have to adapt to and take on various challenges. In the English 4 class (senior general English), the seniors are faced with the challenge of reading and deciphering formal British literature. In a simple process, they use contextual clues to understand the definitions of formal diction words.
In this normal process of using contextual clues, the English 4 Classes are reading a British Literature classic – The Hound of Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle’s main characters, of course, are Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Watson.
With every chapter, they are submitting sentences that contain formal diction and changing those words to middle diction. Every two or three chapters, the class – using small group activities – decipher the meaning of difficult words in ten selected sentences, and write new sentences using those difficult words.
Just like Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Watson, the seniors are using clues and deductive reasoning to determine definitions.
